What is "Buhurt"?

From the French "to wallop", Buhurt (pronounced "boo-hurt" or "boh-hurt") is a modern incarnation of medieval combat training.  Our armor and weapons are historically accurate, but blunted for safety.  We engage in 1v1 technical duels, 1v1 striking-and-grappling "profight"/"outrance" matches, and team vs team "melees", where the winning team is the last one standing.

How often do you train?

We train as a group 3x per week at our list.

Soft Kit: Tuesdays and Thursdays 6:00 pm - 7:30pm
Steel: Saturdays 3:00pm - 6:00pm

Are there age restrictions?

Yes, you must be at least 18 years old to participate in Buhurt.

Do you need experience with martial arts or combat sports?

No, many of our members started Buhurt without any prior experience in combat sports or martial arts.

What is Soft Kit training?

Specialized, padded, foam-based training gear designed for safe, high-intensity drills & sparring without steel armor. It consists of padded armor, a soft helmet, and foam weapons, allowing for full-speed drills, technical training, and reduced injury risk. It is often termed "soft training armor" or "HMB soft training gear". We highly recommend new members to start here for the fundamentals before moving on to steel.

What should I bring to Soft Kit training?

You should wear athletic clothes and bring clean athletic shoes, a water bottle, towel, and a protective cup. For clothing we recommend long sleeves to prevent rubbing bare skin against the edge of the wooden list that surrounds our practice area. Soft helmets & armor is available to borrow.

What kind of weapons do you use?

We use a variety of weapon types including (but not limited to) arming swords, maces, axes (One & Two handed), halberds, longswords, and falchions. Additionally punch shields and bucklers are paired with certain weapon types. Weapons are made of real steel and require training to use safely in full contact.

What is Steel Training?

Steel training involves wearing steel/titanium armor and using real steel weapons. It is recommended that new members train soft kit for about 3 months before moving on to steel. Those new to steel training are encouraged to try on steel to get used to moving around in it and decide what types of steel armor are the best for you before purchasing it.
